Q-Should I convert from "Yankee" gutters to common eave trought system
when I am ready for a new roof?
A- A "Yankee" gutter system, when done right, is the strongest
gutter system you can have. You can literally walk on them and the amount of weight they can handle is 5-10 times the conventional.
However, if you have a lot of trees and need to clean them regularly, you cannot adapt a leaf protection system to them. If
you have poor insulation and venting the ice damning can breakdown the "Yankee" gutter and the roof's edge. |

Q- I have some down spouts that constantly maintain ice and the over
flow at the gutter and spouts are causing a dangerous situation. Why? And what can I do?
A- Make
sure that the spout and its elbows are clear of debris before winter hits. In some homes you will never stop this ice if
the spout is burried in the shade. When the sun creeps over the roof edge and thaws the snow leading to the gutters
but the down spout never sees the sun, there could be substantial temperature difference. In most cases the solution
will be to run a heat wire system in the down spout from the gutter to the ground. This will keep the thaws until they
reach ground or drain tile. |
